I bought some whole honeycomb for a project, and after the display, I decided to enjoy the honey anyway. I notice that when I take a bite plain, the wax is noticebly unpleasant in my mouth, and I spit it out, but when I spread some on toast with peanut butter (yum) the texture wasn't obvious between the whole wheat and the wax and I ended up swallowing it all together.
Any benefit or negative to eating the whole comb?

Re: consuming wax
Sat, December 9, 2006 - 9:04 AMI don't think that there are any negative consequences. I also know of no positive ones, but the wax melts at a temperature higher than the body temperature, so it won't melt in your mouth. And it's pretty flavourless, so I don't know why you'd want to eat it.

Re: consuming wax
Tue, December 12, 2006 - 12:30 AMIf you have a small amount to deal with and dont' want to chew the wax, just crush the comb and strain it through a colander. The size of holes doesn't really matter- even largish ones work, but screen ones will catch more of the debris. It might take a while to drip through, so make sure ants can't get into it (I set mine in a moat of water in a tub when I do this (Im a beekeeper)) -
