Has anyone else heard about the disapearing bees in the northwest. I read yesterday that about 30% of a bee colony will naturally disappear when the come back to their hives to harvest but now there has been a huge increase in the disappearance. I also read that every third bite of food that you eat has is because of bees pollination.

consuming wax

I bought some whole honeycomb for a project, and after the display, I decided to enjoy the honey anyway. I notice that when I take a bite plain, the wax is noticebly unpleasant in my mouth, and I spit it out, but when I spread some on toast with peanut butter (yum) the texture wasn't obvious between the whole wheat and the wax and I ended up swallowing it all together.
Any benefit or negative to eating the whole comb?

CATASTROPHIC BEE COLONY COLLAPSE IS NOT AFFECTING ORGANIC HIVES

In the United States beekeepers in 24 states are experiencing record losses of honeybees. Some states have reported up to 70% disappearances of commercial bee populations. Researchers are struggling to find the causes of this mysterious collapse.

A crucial element of this story, missing from reports in the mainstream media, is the fact that organic beekeepers across North America are not experiencing colony collapses. The millions of dying bees are hyper-bred varieties whose hives are regularly fumigated with toxic pesticides by conventional beekeepers attempting to ward off mites.

In contrast, organic beekeepers avoid pesticides and toxic chemicals and strive to use techniques that closely emulate the ecology of bees in the wild. Researchers are beginning to link the mass deaths of non-organic bees to pesticide exposure, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and the common practice of moving conventional bee hives over long distances.

screwed up on installing package oops and help please

Help (I cross posted this in case someone sees in on another forum)
well, long story short, and because I am a spaz I wount get into how it happened, spilt milk, cant unring a bell, or close the bard door after the horse.. :-X.you get my point...well here ya go...
My queen was like  "so out of here" when I installed a package today. I will not elaborate, lets just say, since this was my first package, and I am pablam fed installing nuks...like watching a favorite christmas ornament break, my queen flew off when the cork, well, you know...umm, well, lets just say by the time I realized the wrong cork was being removed, she knew it and flew out of her cage. :?

Now,
question number 1
What are the chances she stayed close by and did not fly to hong kong. And will stay close the hive and will retreat in there as she watches everyone else this afternoon, (I know, no one has a crystal ball) :(

and question number 2
if I dont see any comb being drawn by the gals by say Monday (This is Saturday) should I just go ahead and put a new queen in there (of course cage and all - hello) assuming Queen said, Hell yes and flew away today.

just a couple questions.

Berkeley, Feb 7th- top bar hive and organic beekeepers' meeting

Hello beeks,

Myself and K. Ruby are having a get-together for top bar hive beekeepers in Berkeley/East Bay area on Feb 7th. I think the meetup will be at my house in west Berkeley unless we have an unusually high rate of RSVP's in which case I"ll find another site nearby.

Wednesday, Feb 7
7-9 PM
RSVP to girlmark_list_email@localb100.com for exact address

If you have photos, gear to show off, or any other object of discussion, feel free to bring it (we don't have a projector but can probably set up a largescreen computer monitor for viewing digital photos if you bring them on a CD).

I have a hive in the backyard (not that we'll be able to see much of it in the evening) and I'll bring an empty screen bottom TBH and some of those cool cutout-handling top bars (see this thread: http://www.beesource.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=16;t=000454#000018)that "Tx_ashhurst" from the beesource forum invented.

I want to discuss varroa strategies, small cell and natural cell beekeeping (see http://bwrangler.farvista.net/ for more information on all these things)

Ruby wants to discuss the following:
"I would like to network on who has strong colonies they'd be willing
to split come spring. I have bought commercial hygenic bees the last
2 years and have not had good luck with them through the winter--not
mites as far as I know--just dwindling populations until there's not
enough bees to maintain the hive...

I know folks have lots of different experiences with our east bay
sweet ants--that might also be a topic to share.

I have a few cool bee photos--mostly of honey bees but also a few
shots of wild bees that people might like to see. "

I know most people might have their favorite local producers, but I have found tremendous variety on Ebay and most are from the producer...and good prices...some honey form Europe, Israel, etc...
Does anyone know anything about consuming local pollen honey and reduction of allergy response....something I've heard...

Someone in another tribe pointed me to this website.

Their views on honey and beekeeping would be laughable if they were not so delusionally serious about it.

Fermented honey with water is called mead and it's sooo yummy. I went to the Redstone Meadery in Boulder and it was neat to see how they make mead. They use fruits, honey, and water to make some really delicious honey wine.
Has anyone drank mead before and did they like it?

Good way to find local honey suppliers, no matter where you are....

I just thought I should mention that a great way to find a local source of honey is to call your local law enforcement and ask who they call for removal of bee swarms.

Either that person or the person they give the bees too will probably either be the person you want or can send you to the people you want.

Hi Brothers/Sisters,

I live in Northen California Marin and I am trying to find a local honey producer to buy directly from them. Do you know anybody here close from San Rafael?

I use California wild flowers honey that I buy from United Market but every year bewteen February and March I get a little allergies that I don't like :) I never had anything like that before I moved to marin county.

Thanks in advance,

Peace.

Stingin' Stories

I have a couple of bee stories. The first was about when my brother and I were very little, we used to catch all kinds of varieties of bugs and critters. Well, one day we decided to try to catch a bee. We did this for about an hour before I got bored, but my brother kept on trying for about another hour until suddenly he started to cry. It turns out that he had finally managed to catch one.

I remember when I first got stung by a bee (Well a wasp). I sat down on the car seat only to find out that dead wasps can sting you.

Anyway, I'm sure that some of you folks can share some bee stinging stories. Probably a lot more interesting than mine.

By the way, if you guys know of good source for many varieties of good honey, I would love to hear of some. If they are local to Denver area or at least Colorado, that would be even better, but internet sources are also cool. I'd love to get some exotic varieties that you can't really find around here.

Oh, and nectars. It would be cool to know about some good nectars, too.

I just mixed up 5 Gallons of the following potion 4 days ago:

1 1/2 Gal. Raw Fireweed/Wildflower Honey
1 1/2 Gal. Raw Orange Blossom Honey
1 Gal. Canned Black Cherries and Juice
1 Gal Frozen Strawberries
1/2 Gal. Blueberries
1 Quart Blackberries
5 Lb. Mixed Pineapple, Banana, Papaya and Mango
2 Oz. Dried Heather Flowers and Tips
4 Vanilla Beans
2 cups Scottish Yeast and the 2 Cups of Beer it was stored in
2 Oz.Yeast Nutrients

It has just begun to ferment at the rate of one bubble every 30 seconds. Our batch of Dark Heineken got faster than 1 bubble per second! I hope it is ready for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

I tried real hard to get Heather Honey, but had no luck. Can anybody help? I'm willing to pay quite a bit of money for it to be shipped from Scotland. I've read in Buhner's Sacred And Healing Herbal Beers that Pure Heather Blossom Honey is the consistency of Jello, which may account for the confusion over whether the Ambrosia of the Gods was a solid or a liquid.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Liquify fruit in blender.
Mix together all ingredients in a large glass water jug (carboy).
Wait 6 months to 5 Years, freely sampling as it progresses!!
Repeat making recipe and sampling as necessary.

After 6 Months you can begin using Mead in your cooking. It makes a great sauce for beef, lamb, poultry, and pork. Add some cayeene pepper and some horseradish for a great seafood dip.

Has anyone else tried this wonderful liqueur? I had seen the interesting bottle at BevMo a number of times but hadn't wanted to spring for the whole $$ amount in case it was awful. But a friend brought it back from Germany and let me try it. She didn't know she could get it in U.S! It is AWESOME. My favorite flask contents for Faire and just bought a new bottle of it to share at Dickens this year. Slightly thick, very potent, and the honey sweetness lingers on your lips for quite a while. Ahhhh. Perfect for sharing a memorable kiss. ;-)

Imagine - Happy Sun Indians crying!

Dr. Mitzva was sitting in his yard enjoying the early morning sun. Birds were singing, children were laughing on their way to school, and inside the house Mrs. Goldengreen was cheerfully dusting.
"What a lovely, happy day," he murmured. "Everything is sunny and smiley, just the way a day should be. I hope no one calls me today. I'd like to catch up on my reading."

Just then, the phone rang very loudly. Dr. Mitzva picked up the receiver and listened. He sighed. "Very well," he said. "I suppose I shall have to come." He hung up.

"Mrs. Goldengreen," he called, "could you kindly prepare my travelling bag for me? And I think I shall need a saddle. Do I happen to have an old saddle somewhere?"

"A saddle? Can't you use your bicycle? Besides, I thought you were going to spend the day in the garden, reading."

"I thought so too," sighed Dr. Mitzva again, "but my friends the Happy Sun Indians need me. It seems they aren't so happy or sunny anymore. In fact, the entire tribe is walking around under a cloud. They haven't smiled or laughed since it snowed last winter! Some of them are even crying. Imagine - Happy Sun Indians crying! I shall have to take a look and see what I can do. Did you find a saddle?"

Mrs. Goldengreen didn't find a saddle but she did find a book she handed to Dr. Mitzva. "Here," she said, "take this with you. It might help."

Just then a rider and two horses were seen coming down Cobblestone Lane. Windows opened up, children cheered, drivers honked and waved. Indians on horses were not an everyday sight in Cedarville.

"Is there a circus in town?" asked one excited little boy.

"Naw!" said his brother. "It's probably another one of Dr. Mitzva's friends. But he's the saddest looking Indian I ever saw. He looks like he's going to cry!"

And indeed he did. He stopped at Dr. Mitzva's house and waited for the doctor to put on his gray bowler hat and straighten his red dotted bow tie. He picked up Dr. Mitzva's bags, and then picked up Dr. Mitzva himself and sat him on top of the second horse.

"It's a good thing you brought a saddle," said Dr. Mitzva. "Mine seems to have disappeared." The Indian nodded and wiped a tear from his nose. All along the road, people saw the tall, feather-dressed Indian and the short bowler-hatted doctor. They smiled. Dr. Mitzva smiled back. The Indian sniffed.

At the reservation, two hundred gloomy Indians stood in a circle and waited for Dr. Mitzva. Chief Happy Face began to cry.

"Our medicine man is strong," he said, "but not strong enough to cure our sad-sickness. Perhaps your medicine can help."

"Whatever is the matter?" asked Dr. Mitzva. "You have always been the world's happiest Indians. You make everyone smile. What happened?"

"Nothing," sobbed the Chief. "It's just that there are so many things we want but don't have. So many things to do which we can't possibly do. So many places to go that we'll never get to. It's just so very, very sad. So much to want and so little to actually get and have and do!"

"I only have two outfits of clothing," said Little Eyes. "One for everyday and one for ceremonies. And I only have one horse. My friends in other tribes have five or six horses each! My clothes are always being washed and my horse is always tired. I need more clothes to wear and more horses to ride!"

"I don't need clothes or horses," said Biggest Brother. "I want to sing in the opera but everyone laughs at me. They say I have no voice and I can't sing on tune. All I can do is play the drums and chant Indian music. It's so boring."

"And I want to be an important leader, like Chief Happy Face. But I have no tribe to lead," complained Susan WindStorm.

More and more Indians stood in line, each waiting to tell Dr. Mitzva what they wanted and what they didn't have. When they were all finished, Mrs. White-Moon-Face asked, "How can we be happy if no one has what he or she wants?" Dr. Mitzva pulled on his moustache and pushed back his hat.

"My dear friends," he finally said, "the solution is simple. You must all want exactly what you have! If you aren't happy with what you have, all your moons will be spent crying and complaining and the sad-sickness will spread. Little Eyes should clean his clothing and take care of his loyal horse. Biggest Brother should practice his drums and chants. He is the best drum player and chanter in the tribe. Indian music isn't boring at all, and isn't he lucky that Indian songs don't have to be sung on tune? And Susan WindStorm is already an important Indian chief. She teaches all the tribe's children in school, and leads them after school and arranges and decides everything for the tribe's holiday celebrations. Why, without Susan, the Happy Sun Indians would never have a happy party or feast or celebration to go to!"

"What about me?" asked Chief Happy Face. "I'm sad too."

"Why are you sad?" asked Dr. Mitzva.

"Because everyone in my tribe is so gloomy and dismal and gray!"

"Then let's make the gloomy gray all bright and shiny," said Dr. Mitzva. "Let Little Eyes and everyone else prepare their best holiday clothing and brush the horses until they glow. Let Biggest Brother call out the drummers and the dancers and the band. Let Susan WindStorm organize a feast. And let's all get ready to give thanks for who we are and what we have. If each of us wants exactly what he has, no one will want anything else and everyone will be happy! And you will continue to be the smiley chief of the world's happiest tribe!"

The next day, two hundred Sun Happy Indians gathered in front of their circle of wigwams. Drums beat, chants were sung, Indian's danced and ate and told stories and passed the Friendship Pipe from one to the other. Finally, Dr. Mitzva held up his hand for silence. He took out Mrs. Goldengreen's book and began to read in a loud voice. The title of the book was: How to be Happy With Whatever You Have - 613 Funny Jokes for Unhappy Indians and Other People.

When Dr. Mitzva reached the last joke, Chief Happy Face was smiling brightly. "Ah," he said, "I was right. Your medicine is truly strong and good."

"It's not my medicine," Dr. Mitzva insisted. "Being happy with what we have is a mitzva, and all mitzvos are good, healthy medicine!"

Made a trip to an area appetizer shop (Zabar's) and on an impulse, I bought three jars of infused honeys.

All by Palette Foods http://www.palettefinefoods.com

Ones star anise, ones crushed chilis, ones lavender. The lavender I got for Earl Grey or Lady Grey tea. The star anise I figure for glazing chicken.

The lavender is mild. If its possible, it seems more of a sensation on the palate than an actual flavor. Yet there is an actual flavor there.

I used to be plagued by respiratory problems in the winter but when I stumbled across Thyme Honey from a New Zealand company called "Airborne" I said goodbye to winter colds. Adding some to my tea or just taking a spoon full drastically reduced my immiune system latching on to any airborne germies. Look for it is you can. Wonderful!!!

Royal Jelly

Out all the Hive products, this is one is one of the most remarkable. Scientists have yet to identify all the compounds that make up Royal Jelly. It's produced by " nurse " bees, workers that are about 5-15 days old from a diet of Bee pollen and Honey. It is secreted from glands and it's thick white and creamy. The Queen bee feeds upon this substance exclusively and it prolongs her life up to 5 years compared to the workers who live about 6 weeks then die. During this time the Queen can lay about 2,200 eggs a day ( 200 times her body weight ) More than 2,000,000 eggs in her life time. The egg that produces a Queen bee is no different than that which produces a worker, save only the larvae that hatches is fed only Royal jelly and larvae destined to be workers are not fed Royal jelly.
Royal jelly has a moisture content of about 66%, protein 12 1/2%, fat 5 1/2%, carbohydrates 12 1/2%, and 3 1/2% of the content of Royal jelly has not been identified yet. A compound that keeps it from being contaminated is 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid, which possesses strong antibacterial and antifungal properties and amkes up about 2-3% of the Royal jelly.
Royal jelly is rich in bee pheromones; natural hormones, all 8 essential amino acids in particular; cystine, lysine, and arginine, B vitamins; especially pantothenic acid ( B5 ), RNA and DNA, sugars, sterols, fatty acids, phosphorus coumpounds and acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is utilized by human brains as a neurotransmitter and improves long and short term memory.
pantothenic acid has been shown to increase the life spans of lab mice and has similiar effects in humans.
Royal jelly has been for effective in treating Alzheimer' disease, Buerger's disease, reduces trembling in patients with Parkinson's disease, improves symtoms of Multible sclerosis, and Arthitis. Pharmaceutical companies would love to have it banned completly.
It also has anti-aging qualities that have been shown in clinical trials to not only slow down tissue degeneration but in some cases reversing it completly ! Royal jelly is considerd to be antitumor, antiaging, antiviral, antibiotic, antibacterial, tonic, nutritive, euphoric, adaptogenic, hormonal normalizer, and antidepressant. It can basically regulate your body to run perfectly. It can preserve the life and strenth. It also has a long history as an aphrodisiac, increase fertility and sexual function. Eat it !

christmas berry honey

I had to try this honey from Hawaii and it was some good num num. Got it from Glory Bee Foods. The only thing I didn't like about it was that they filtered it, limiting its nutritional value. So I watered it down and fermented it into Mead. One batch is done another is still going. I tell ya, it almost has a flavour like Agave nectar when fermented, very tasty stuff, I drank some last night and recieved a very pleasant buzzzz ;P
I'd luv to get this from the source unfiltered, I bet it tastes a world better. Anyone from Hawaii out there who knows bee keepers in the land of christmas berry ????

Bee Quote

Nature’s Law dictates that, in order to survive, bees must work together. As a result, they instinctively possess a sense of social responsibility. They have no constitution, no law, no police, no religion or moral training, but because of their nature, they labor faithfully together. Occasionally, they may fight, but in general, based on cooperation, the whole colony survives. We human beings have a constitution, laws and a police force. We have religion, remarkable intelligence and a heart with a great capacity for love. We have many extraordinary qualities, but in actual practice, I think we are lagging behind those small insects. In some respects, I feel we are poorer than the bees.

pollen

Bee pollen mixed in honey will keep you youthful and healthy.
Bee pollen has been found to contain Human Growth Hormone
factors, besides being rich in protein, vitamines, minerals
and other compounds. You could literally live off of honey
and bee pollen and live to a ripe old age. HGH is something
of a big buzz right now, many products are on the market
that contain synthetic HGH, avoid these, they have side
effects. Bee pollen is natural. HGH can help you cheat the
aging process. There are some products that use specific
chain amino acids in a proprietary polymere matrix that actually stimnulates natural production in your body by
giving the pituitary gland the building blocks to produce
more HGH. The Ancient Romans noted that Brits didn't
start to age til they were about 120 years old. That was
becausethey ate lots of bee products and drank lots of Mead! Bee pollen is also great energy food too, I like to take a
few grams before biking or hiking (even an hour before sex!).
Fresh local Bee pollen is the best, wherever you can find
it. Keep it refridgerated or frozen. Yum !

Propolis is a little known bee product created from various
tree resins collected by bees. In the Bible it is refered to as the " Balm of Gilead " and has amazing healing qualities. Bees use propolis as a natural disinfectant and place it at the entrance on their hive where they enter and it's also used to seal up cracks between combs. It smells wonderful burned on charcoal. Extracts are available in alcohol tinctures, these are great for placing on cuts and other kinds of skin problems such as achne. Propolis can be taken internally as well and has been shown to stimulate immune response. It's very anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-bacterial.

Honey has medicinal properties as well as being tasty.
Honey placed on a cut and bandaged will heal a cut
much faster than most antibiotic ointments. In Europe
honey is sometimes used to speed up healing after plastic
surgery. Honey contains many vitamines and minerals
that are essential for good health. It also contains many
beneficial enzynmes as well.

I love honey. It's good for just about anything. The
variety is amazing. Dip in. Taste the sweetness as it
melts in your mouth. It's best raw, uncooked, and unfiltered.
I like to buy it in 5 gallon buckets when I can. Bees are amazing little critters and they can produce lots of honey
within just a few weeks. I hope to get my own hive some
time in the near future. Yum !

sticky honey from head to toe, yum. I found a company in
Mexico that sells wildflower honey by the ton. A swimming
pool full of honey. There has got to be some rich eccentric
person out there who would be willing to fill a pool up
with honey to have a bunch of beautiful people dive in ;P
